CD: Sudden Collapses in Public Places

Julia Darling was one of the North East’s most acclaimed and best-loved writers at the time of her death from cancer in April 2005. While Julia was alive she collaborated with Neil Blenkinsop, David Scott , Zoe Lambert and theatre director Jeremy Herrin to produce a song cycle based on her critically-acclaimed collection of poetry, Sudden Collapses in Public Places. The poems reflect Julia’s witty and irreverent take on what it is like to deal with the absurdity and normality of life as a cancer patient and to contemplate one’s own death. The project was revived in 2006, and David and Neil wrote a number of new songs to extend the cycle.

Sudden Collapses in Public Places was performed by Neil, David, Zoe and musical group F at The Sage Gateshead on 26, 27 and 28 September 2006.

This CD contains the whole of the Sudden Collapses song cycle, and is available to buy direct from New Writing North.

“Even in her darkest moments, Julia retained her sense of fun, which is why her writing will always cheer you up… This CD is a permanent reminder of a great night and it will cheer you up too.” Review in The Crack, 2007
