Digital Literature

In 2018, New Writing North ran a Digital Literature programme of training and events, which offered professional development for writers in the digital sphere and included business and professional development for writers alongside creative opportunities.

We supported writers to develop and manage their brands and professional profile online and to inspire new ideas through access to expert advice, training and peer-to-peer support. This page brings together some of the learning from this programme. We hope you find it useful. You can find more resources for writers here.

New Writing North produced the programme as part of the Creative Fuse North East project, collaboration between higher education and the creative industries.

We hosted Digi_Create a conference event that explored creative ways that writers are using digital technologies and distribution to develop their work and to engage with audiences.

We showcased projects and collaborations and explored how artists and industry professionals have developed, funded and launched new ideas. Here you can watch top tips for working in the digital sphere and on partnerships from Alison Boyle (Relationship Manager for Literature at Arts Council England) and writers and producers: Richard Evans and Kate Pullinger.

Here is a film that the Creative Fuse team made about the project.

Digi Transform

Digi_Transform was a bespoke professional digital development programme for 15 writers, which supported them to audit their existing digital profile and capabilities and provided them with access to a range of resources, support and mentoring to help them transform their online presence and to grow their businesses. The writers worked with professional photographers, designers, developers and industry mentors to develop new websites and to think about how they operate across digital media. The writers who took part were very varied in terms of the lengths of their careers and the type of work that they produce.

Here are examples of some of the websites created as part of the project with developers Made By Plumbers.
