New Writing North are delighted to host this online event as we launch the 2021 Northern Writers’ Awards.

This roadshow will feature a panel discussion with four previous winners, and will offer essential advice for anyone considering applying for the Northern Writers’ Awards.

Speakers include four previous Northern Writers’ Awards winners: J. A. Mensah; Alex Clarke, Kit Fan; Polly Atkin.

J. A. Mensah is a writer based in the North East of England. She was Leverhulme Artist in Residence at the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York and she holds a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from Newcastle University. Her first novel won the inaugural NorthBound Book Award and will be published by Saraband in 2021.

Alex Clarke is a disabled, scriptwriter from Manchester. She writes drama and comedy for TV, radio, film, and theatre. Her new radio drama airs on BBC Radio 4 in 2021. Currently her new TV drama series is under option with Dancing Ledge Productions and she’s scriptwriter on a BFI funded TV pilot for Adapted Pictures.

Kit Fan is a novelist, poet, and critic who lives in York. Diamond Hill, his debut novel about Hong Kong, will be published by Dialogue Books in May 2021. His second poetry collection As Slow As Possible was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and The Irish Times Poetry Book of the Year.

Polly Atkin Polly Atkin lives in Cumbria. Her first poetry collection Basic Nest Architecture (Seren: 2017) is followed by a third pamphlet, With Invisible Rain (New Walk: 2018). Her first pamphlet bone song(Aussteiger, 2008) was shortlisted for the Michael Marks Pamphlet Award, 2009, and second, Shadow Dispatches (Seren, 2013), won the Mslexia Pamphlet Prize, 2012.
