To mark the announcement of the 2025 Gordon Burn Prize shortlist, join prize chair, award-winning journalist and writer Terri White (Empire, the Sunday Times, the Guardian) in conversation with acclaimed Newcastle writers Preti Taneja, (winner of the 2022 prize with Aftermath) and Richard T. Kelly (Crusaders, The Black Eden) for a celebration of Gordon Burn’s life, writing and relationship to Newcastle.
Gordon Burn was born in a working-class household in Newcastle in 1948. He became a renowned journalist, writing for publications including the Guardian, Rolling Stone and Esquire and was the author of genre-defying books including Alma Cogan, Somebody’s Husband, Somebody’s Son and Happy Like Murderers.
Founded in 2012 to honour Gordon’s memory, the Gordon Burn Prize has built a reputation for identifying and celebrating brilliant books that often find their readers outside the mainstream. Past winners have included Kathryn Scanlan in 2024 for her novel Kick the Latch, Peter Pomerantsev’s This is Not Propaganda and Benjamin Myers’ Pig Iron. The prize is run in partnership by New Writing North, Faber & Faber and the Gordon Burn Trust, with sponsorship from Newcastle University and NCLA.
