New Writing North present an evening with Mary Beard, to celebrate the publication of her new book, Emperor of Rome
What was it really like to rule and be ruled in the Ancient Roman world? In her international best-seller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now, she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome takes the reader into the palace corridors, and beyond the hype of politics, power and succession. It’s a revolutionary approach to an apparently familiar subject and will change forever our idea of ancient history.
Mary Beard is Emerita Professor and Fellow of Newnham College, Cambridge and the classics editor of the TLS. She has worldwide academic acclaim. Her previous books include the bestselling, Pompeii, SPQR, and Women & Power. She has made numerous TV series and her books have been published in over thirty languages.
Chaired by Professor Edith Hall.
