Cuckoo goes to Sunderland!

Posted by

Hot on the heels of our new Alnwick group, Cuckoo is flying to Sunderland to rescue the city’s young writers. We’re bringing our unique brand of book-based fun to the city’s newest and most exciting site, Pop Recs Ltd on Fawcett Street, a café, record shop and community arts venue run by local heroes Frankie and the Heartstrings.

From November, we’ll be running a fortnightly writing group from PopRecs, and to launch the group with a bang there will be two days’ worth of Cuckoo Young Writers’ workshops during half term. The workshops are a chance for 12-19 year old writers to try out different genres, work with professional writers, get feedback on their work and get a taste of what our regular writing groups are all about. To honour our new home in PopRecs, all the sessions will be very loosely music themed too (apart from the last session, which is all about zombies).

Details of the FREE sessions are:

Thursday 31 October, 11am-1pm: Writing stories with Carina Rodney

Thursday 31 October, 2pm-4pm: Music journalism with Claire Dupree (NARC. magazine)

Friday 1 November, 11am-1pm: Poetry and lyrics with John Challis

Friday 1 November, 2pm-4pm: Dark fiction (zombies, vampires, apocalypses!) with Amy Mackelden

The regular writers’ group will begin on Saturday 2 November, 11am-1pm, and will take place every fortnight at the same time.

Young people can sign up for one session or all four by filling in the online form at http://newwritingnorth.wufoo.eu/forms/cuckoo-young-writers-workshops-in-sunderland/. Places are limited and you’ll receive an email to confirm your place after registration.

New Writing North would like to thank the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust for their support.
