The Little Read

This year, our Little Read campaign will gift hundreds of picture books to libraries across County Durham, inviting children to read for pleasure and be part of a shared moment for the county. As well as events at the festival, you’ll find resources which can be used at home or in school to engage with the story. We hope you find a moment to enjoy reading and sharing a story together!

Join in by sending us pictures inspired by this year’s Little Read using #DBFLittleRead on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Moth: An Evolution Story
by Isabel Thomas and illustrated by Daniel Egnéus

This year’s Little Read is Moth: An Evolution Story, written by Isabel Thomas and illustrated by Daniel Egnéus. This beautiful and poetic picture book is about the extraordinary way in which animals have evolved and is a perfect introduction to natural selection and evolution for children.

Against a lush backdrop of lichen-covered trees, the peppered moth lies hidden. Until the world begins to change…

Along come people with their magnificent machines which stain the land with soot. In a beautiful landscape changed by humans, how will one little moth survive?
