Time: 9.30am–3.30pm
Cost: £20-£40, depending on number of students
New Writing North is partnering with leading publisher Hachette UK to offer a Careers in Publishing Insight Day for Key Stage 4 and 5 students. Publishing staff will be leading panels and practical workshops, where students can understand more about potential careers in writing and publishing, and build skills to help them on their career journeys.
The Careers in Publishing Insight Day will be held at Northumbria University Business and Law Building on City Campus East. Students will have the added benefit of visiting a university and experiencing lecture and seminar formats. All students will have access to two panel discussions and four workshops throughout the day. Lunch will be included free of charge for all students and teachers.
Workshops will cover some of the key areas of publishing, including roles in Editorial, Marketing and Publicity, Sales, Rights and Production. The sessions will offer an understanding of what jobs like this entail and the skills and subject areas that are useful. Workshops will be made up of smaller groups of students, with the chance to undertake practical exercises and ask questions.
The Careers in Publishing Insight Day will offer students the chance to learn about at least four different careers in publishing, as well as hearing from additional Hachette staff during panel discussions and lunch-time networking. Hachette staff from across the UK, including the recently opened Newcastle office, will share their own career journeys so far and offer advice about getting into creative careers.
The Careers in Publishing Insight Day is open to students from Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. It would be well suited to English classes, or for Key Stage 5 students interested in hearing more about creative careers. All sessions will be supported by New Writing North staff and facilitators (our facilitators work on our own school programmes and all have enhanced DBS checks).

Careers in Publishing Roadshows 2024

In 2024 New Writing North teamed up with Hachette UK to deliver Careers in Publishing Roadshows to thirteen schools in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.
Hachette publishing staff and Hachette author Daniel Tawse travelled to each school for a live event about careers in writing and publishing. Participating schools also received a digital masterclass with Hachette, where editors, publicists, designers and rights executives provided students with insight into a day in the life of their specific role.
The Careers in Publishing events reached students from Year 7 to Year 12 and covered ground from North Shields up to Amble and back down to Longbenton. Over 1200 students attended a live Careers in Publishing event at their school.
“The opportunity to actually meet those working in the industry was really inspiring for the students. It allowed them to connect their love for reading and books with practical career choices they could make.”
