Book

Jake Morris-Campbell’s Between the Salt and the Ash asks what stories the North East can tell about itself in the wake of Christianity and coal. Lanre Bakare’s We Were There is about a Black Britain outside London, that for too long has been unexplored. Both authors highlight the unsung stories of people from across the North, painting a portrait of a diverse and rich heritage.

South-Shields born Jake Morris-Campbell is a poet and writer and a BBC New Generation Thinker. His previous book was longlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize in 2021.

Lanre Bakare is the Guardian’s arts and culture correspondent. He has worked for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Guardian US team and was a senior correspondent on the Cotton Capital project. We Were There is his first book. He was born in Bradford.

Chaired by Professor Julie-Marie Strange, Durham University.
