North East Poets

We are looking for North East poets to join a new professional development group in Newcastle.

The journey of developing your writing doesn’t end with the publication of your first pamphlet, or even when you’re publishing your first or second collection. It can be challenging to find other writers at the same stage, or development opportunities that are pitched at the right level. This group will offer continuing craft development and a supportive network for poets navigating the next step in their career.

Supported by the poet Degna Stone, the group will meet one evening a month from October 2024. On the first Wednesday of the month, members can attend a structured session delivered by an experienced practitioner. These sessions might be an acclaimed poet talking about structuring a collection; practical sessions on how to build a sustainable writing career; insight into poetry publishing. Informal sessions will also be available, for group members to share work and troubleshoot issues.

Who can apply to be part of this group?

North East Poets aims to create a supportive place for writers to develop their skills and connect with their peers in the region. This group is aimed at poets within the traditional publishing route. At minimum, accepted members must have published their first pamphlet and be working towards a collection. The group is also open to poets who have already published their first collection.

The group will be based in Newcastle, but poets from across the North East may apply. Poets will be expected to manage their own travel to sessions.
