Free Thinking Festival 2015

Posted by

We are delighted to be working with BBC Radio 3 on two projects, which will be presented at the BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 7 November.

Notes from Underground, a song-cycle written by poet Sean O’Brien and composer Agustín Fernández, was our major commission of Durham Book Festival 2015. The new work had its world premiere at the Gala Theatre, Durham on Thursday 15 October. Sean and Agustín will be in conversation at Free Thinking Festival, discussing the collaborative approach, their inspiration and playing clips from the concert. Events at the festival are free, but must be booked in advance. You can book for this session at www.sagegateshead.com/event/sean-obrien.

For the Verb New Voices initiative, New Writing North worked with BBC Radio 3, Arts Council England and other literature organisations to select four writers to develop innovative new work for radio. Andy Craven-Griffiths, Kamal Kaan, Chanje Kunda and Carmen Marcus were selected this summer and have been developing their work for radio. Andy, Carmen and Chanje will stage an informal performance of their work live on the Sage Gateshead concourse on Saturday 7 November at 6pm at the Free Thinking Festival.

Following this, each of the four writers will feature on The Verb, BBC Radio 3’s cabaret of the word. Carmen Marcus will appear on the programme on 13 November; Chanje Kunda on 20 November; and Kamal Kaan on 18 December. Andy Craven-Griffiths will feature on the show in the New Year.

Free Thinking Festival runs from 6-8 November at Sage Gateshead. For the full programme, see the Sage Gateshead website.
