Introducing Neela Moon

Neela Moon is a collective of women-writers of colour from the Northeast of England. Rooted in a love for storytelling, their work spans several intersecting themes, including identity and belonging, politics and personal history, gender and intimacy, love, loss, and the everyday rituals of life.
Established as Brown Girls Write in 2022, the group first gained recognition through their spoken work and poetry performances at the Newcastle Fringe and NOVUM. Their debut poetry anthology Thresholds (Butcher’s Dog Publishing) was published in 2024, a collection that celebrated the multiplicity of voices within the collective and contributed to diversifying contemporary British writing.
Now working under the name Neela Moon Collective, the group engages in creative practices that honour shared heritage, generational memory, and the radical potential of writing, with the hope to grow both individually and collectively. Their work is shaped by diasporic sensibilities as well as the local realities of life in the Northeast, offering narratives that are both intimate and expansive.
Although currently a closed group, Neela Moon operates as a peer-led space, rooted in mutual care, collective growth, and the belief that writing is both a personal and political act. They support one another in developing their craft, offering feedback, encouragement, and space for experimentation.
