Little Free Libraries come to Durham

The Little Free Library movement began in Wisconsin, USA, in 2009, when Todd Bol built a model of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front garden. His neighbours and friends loved it.
The ethos of Little Free Libraries is simple: “Take a book, leave a book.”
There are now nearly 25,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. There are a small number already in the UK and we are proud to build the first Little Free Libraries for the North East of England with communities in County Durham. By the autumn, there will be 15 Little Free Libraries in County Durham. Some of the libraries have been built by groups which meet at Greenfields Arts Centre and Locomotion, and others have been built by the communities in which they are placed.
You’ll find Little Free Libraries at locations throughout Durham City—including the above constructed by Greenfield Arts CREE group in Palace Green Libary—as well as in Tow Law Community Centre; Waterhouses Community Association; Jubilee Hall, West Rainton; Jack Drum Arts, St Cuthbert’s Centre; Pelton Community Centre; The Witham, Barnard Castle; and at Locomotion.
Little Free Libraries all begin with a range of books, suitable for all ages. We hope they will be well used and enjoyed. Please visit County Durham’s Little Free Libraries, leave a book you have finished with, and take a new one of your choice.
