Manifestos brought to life

Posted by

On Friday 30 October, Cuckoo Young Writers performed Manifestos at Northern Stage, as part of this year’s Juice Festival. Since the summer, a group of young writers have been working with poet Paul Summers to explore issues that they feel strongly about. They discussed their views with academics, journalists and writers, and then devised their own creative “manifestos”, which were presented on Friday as short plays, spoken word performances, film-poems and songs.

The young writers and performers were joined on stage by Reality Boots (a band formed by Skimsone Arts’ Young Artists Collective) who performed music about young adults’ rights, and by former-Futurehead Barry Hyde, who performed the protest songs which he wrote with the Sunderland Cuckoo Young Writers group earlier in the year.

At the event, we collected feedback from audience members on what their own manifestos would be. Their words have been collected and are being crafted into a poem by Paul Summers, which we look forward to sharing later in the year.
