Applications are open for a range of exciting new opportunities from our Writing and Publishing Skills Hub for freelancers, writers, and young people.
Are you a writer interested in developing your skills for facilitation? Or maybe you’re a freelancer looking to invest in your practice through training, mentoring and networking? Or perhaps you’re looking to get your foot in the door of the book industry? Applications are now open for Inkubator, Young Creative Associates and First Edition Industry Placements.
The Writing and Publishing Skills Hub is supported by funding from North of Tyne Combined Authority. Because of this, applicants must be a current resident of Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland.

Apply for Inkubator
Inkubator is an annual development programme for writers and freelancers who want to develop their skills in facilitation and participatory arts practice with children, young people and adults.
Inkubator provides a cohort of individuals with the practical skills and knowledge you need to deliver sessions with people in schools and community settings. Through the Inkubator programme you’ll receive training in facilitation and the opportunity to shadow this work in real-life settings. As part of Inkubator, you will be matched with a mentor who can provide in-depth support around your practice and individual needs.
Young Creative Associates is a 6-month development programme for early career freelance writers and creatives living in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. The programme is designed to guide and support the next generation of writers and artists in the region.
Over 6-months, participants will be supported to develop their practice through training, mentoring and networking. The package of support, worth more than £1,500 will include:
A £500 bursary grant
Access to a £500 individual fund to put towards your bespoke development needs
Three sessions with a mentor, matched to you based on your practice
Four group skills sessions (over two days) to promote sustainable business practices
First Edition is giving 18-25 year olds from Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland the chance to gain valuable paid experience in the book industry. We have partnered with nationally recognised publishers and independent bookshops to offer a range of flexible and accessible work placements for 2024.
Springboard your career into the book industry with a 5-day work placement and a bursary of £500 to support your involvement. Whether you’re a budding bookseller, a prospective publisher or someone keen to know more about book prizes and events, you’ll gain real world experience to allow you to take the next steps in your career. We are offering both in-person and remote placements that will see you working alongside industry professionals and expand your knowledge and skills.
