New Writing North Young Writers’ Summer Schools are back!
Our FREE Summer Schools are back this year, with more activity than ever. We’ve put together a programme of events across the North East for young people aged 12-19. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced writer or just want to try something new; if you’ve got an interest in creative writing then these Summer Schools are for you.

Newcastle: Songwriting Summer School
Space Six, Commercial Union House, 39 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 6QE
Monday 23rd – Wednesday 25th July, 11am – 4pm
Group Leader: Emily Wiseman
Our Newcastle songwriters group will be supported by Group Leader Emily Wiseman alongside professional songwriters Liz Corney and Kema Kay. This three-day summer school will explore all elements of songwriting, from rap to rhythm, lyrics to sound recording. This is a great opportunity for writers of all levels to come along and try new things.
Newcastle: ‘Draw My Life’ Summer School
Newcastle City Library, 33 New Bridge Street W, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8AX
Monday 30th July-Wednesday 1st August, 11am – 4pm
Group Leader: Emily Wiseman
Work with writer Emily Wiseman and artist Sheryl Jenkins to explore different styles of visual storytelling. From stop-motion animation to time lapse videos, we will draw inspiration from YouTube creators, animation and illustration to write and bring script to life.
Sunderland: Songwriting Summer School
Sunderland Empire Theatre, 4-5 High Street West, Sunderland SR1 3EX
Wednesday 25th-Friday 27th July, 11am – 4pm
Group Leader: Jennie Brewis
Come along to our young songwriters summer school in Sunderland and work with professional songwriters Jennie Brewis and Joe Johnston to write, create and record your own songs. The sessions will explore songwriting through different themes and genres. If you’re someone that enjoys writing, music or singing this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in.
Cramlington: ‘Get Poetic’ Summer School
Community Room, Concordia Leisure Centre, Forum Way, Cramlington, NE23 6YB
Wednesday 8th – Friday 10th August, 11am – 4pm
Group Leader: Danielle Burn
Supported by Group Leader and writer Danielle Burn, you will work with a range of different Guest Writers to explore explore different styles and genres of poetry and spoken word.
We’re super excited to host writers Zoe Murtagh, Anna Woodford, Kay Greyson, Sky Hawkins and Lauren Vevers confirmed and ready to give you a taste of different range to create poetry.
Amble: Lindisfarne (National Trust) Summer School
Amble Library, Middleton Street, Amble, Morpeth, NE65 0ET (with a trip to Lindisfarne on day 1)
Monday 6th August 11am – 5pm and Tuesday 7th August – Wednesday 8th August, 11am – 4pm
Group Leader: Heather Askwith
We’re really excited to announce that we have partnered up with North East National Trust who are going to be hosting us for a day to explore Holy Island, Lindisfarne Castle and most importantly a new immersive art installation by internationally renowned artist Anya Gallaccio.
You will work with Group Leader and writer Heather Askwith along with filmmaker Alan Fentiman, drawing inspiration from Lindisfarne as a jumping-off point for your creative writing. This Summer School will look at different ways of telling stories, combining words, film and sound to create work in response to the installation and the island, with the opportunity to have your work showcased within the castle and shared online.
South Shields: ‘Pick ‘n’ Mix’ Summer School
The Word, 45 Market Place, South Shields, NE33 1JF
Monday 13th – Wednesday 15th August, 11am – 4pm
Group Leader: Lisa Burns
The sessions will all explore the theme of identity, with the final session being focused on producing a final piece of work to share. However, all the sessions will also be stand-alone, so if you want you can come to any (or all!) that you fancy.

2pm – 4pm – Final wrap-up session with Lisa Burns
