Opportunity: Creative Associate Residencies

Posted by

We are looking to appoint six writers or creatives to Creative Associates Residencies, including one Screenwriter in Residence in partnership with Tyneside Cinema. Apply by Monday 29 July.

Background
We launched the Creative Associates programme in March 2022 to appoint writers and creatives to our staff team at a time of growth and development for NWN. Creative Associates bring fresh perspectives to the organisation, while being supported to develop their own creative projects and artistic practice. Since 2023, this programme has formed part of our Writing and Publishing Skills Hub and new appointments are supported with funding from North East Combined Authority.

Who is this opportunity for?
We are seeking five writers or creatives to take part in a six-month residency to create new artistic work within New Writing North. In addition, we have partnered with Tyneside Cinema to offer one writer the opportunity to become Screenwriter in Residence for six-months. Please note, this project is funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority (now North East Combined Authority) and therefore only open to writers living in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland.

New Writing North strives to be a diverse and inclusive organisation.  We aim to empower and enable artists who have been historically excluded to be the artists they want to be without any pressure of representation.  We particularly encourage writers of colour, disabled writers, LGBTQI writers and writers from a socio-economic disadvantaged background.

What will you be expected to do?
As a New Writing North Creative Associate, you will receive support for 6-months to create a new piece of artistic work. We have no preconceptions about what that the work may be (although it will involve writing in some form), we want to provide you with the time and space to create the work within our organisation. There will be a budget of £5,000 for each artist to support the creation of the work. However New Writing North may be in a position to support further fundraising if your project requires it.  Writers will also receive a bespoke mentoring package, which will help you to deliver the project.

As Screenwriter in Residence at Tyneside Cinema, you will receive support  to create a new piece of artistic work for the screen. There will be a budget of £5,000 for each artist to support the creation of the work. Alongside support from New Writing North, the Screenwriter in Residence will be provided with 3-6 months of desk space at the Tyneside Cinema offices, with free access to the cinema’s daily programme of independent cinema from all over the world, including filmmaker Q&As, discussions and special events. They will also have access to the cinema’s extensive archive, detailing programmes going all the way back to the 1960s, and will be able to spend time with the cinema’s creative team and filmmaker guests as they develop their creative practice while based at the cinema.
