Read Regional 2020: Submit new books by writers in the North of England

Read Regional is run by New Writing North in conjunction with 22 library authorities in Yorkshire, North East England and North West England. Each year we select 10-12 new books by Northern authors and promote them widely through libraries and festivals. All participating libraries purchase bulk book orders and receive supporting marketing campaign materials. The authors visit libraries to give readings and to meet book groups. A comprehensive media and social media campaign supports the project.
Read Regional is a great way to launch new authors or to promote authors whose profiles you are looking to build. The campaign has run since 2008 and has supported authors including A A Dhand, Kate Pankhurst, Jenn Ashworth, Kim Moore and Mari Hannah. Included on the campaign in 2019 are Andrew Michael Hurley, Clare Shaw and Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi.
For the 2020 campaign we welcome submissions of fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, graphic novels, young adult and children’s books.
Books submitted must be by a writer who currently lives and works in the North of England. We will consider books published between June 2018 and December 2019.
Self-published writers may apply for Read Regional if they can guarantee that they will be able to fulfil book orders for our distributors within a four-week turnaround.
The author must be available to participate in at least four events across the North between March and June 2020.
Books must be available for us to purchase for the campaign by December 2019. Ideally books will be in paperback; we will consider hardback books only in exceptional circumstances. We will negotiate purchase terms with individual publishers.
How to submit
You will need to submit the following material:
· Publisher and imprint name
· A biography of the author (250 words)
· Publication date
· Information about any PR plans in place for the book
· Cover price
· AI sheet or press release
· Author photo
· Cover image (at least 300dpi)
There is an admin charge of £10 per book. We have introduced this charge because Read Regional is a heavily subsidised programme funded by local library authorities and New Writing North. If this cost is prohibitive for you, please contact Will Mackie on [email protected]
