Live Theatre, Newcastle: Sunday 31 May at 7.30pm (SOLD OUT)

New Writing North is working with Live Theatre to host two evenings celebrating Julia Darling’s writing. This cabaret style evening will feature poetry, fiction, extracts from plays and live music performed by many of Julia’s long-time collaborators, performers and friends including The Poetry Virgins.

Both evenings will be hosted by Charlie Hardwick (Emmerdale), a member of Julia’s performance poetry group The Poetry Virgins and actress in a number of Julia’s plays including The Women Who Painted Ships and Attachments (Live Theatre). Zoe Lambert will perform extracts from Sudden Collapses in Public Places and Personal Belongings with songs and accompaniment by Dave Scott. Jim Kitson will perform songs from Manifesto for a New City (which was originally toured in 2005 by Northern Stage) and The Poetry Virgins will recite a number of Julia’s poems.

On Sunday 31 May, the evening will also feature Tim Dalling (Old Rope String Band), a musician who worked with Julia to turn her poems into songs and recorded them on the album Sudden Blossoms featuring the popular Two Lighthouses and Rendezvous Café: Whitley Bay. At this event, New Writing North will also be announcing the winner of the inaugural Julia Darling Travel Fellowship, a new award to support a writer to travel and write, which was created in Julia’s memory. This second performance is now fully booked.
