Significant Ink: Newcastle – Eligibility, FAQs and Conditions of Entry

Eligibility

You must be over the age of 18.

We accept fiction and narrative non-fiction for this award. The aim of the award is to support new or emerging writers from the global majority. Due to funding, the award must be given to someone who lives in the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority (County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland). You must also not be in full-time education or another government programme (you may still be in education when making the application, as long as you have left education by the time the Significant Ink programme begins in Sept 2026).

For this award, we are looking for writers who have not yet published any work.

Submissions may be on any theme or topic. We accept fiction from any genre, including literary fiction, crime, science fiction, romance and fantasy. You may submit novels, novellas and short stories. We are asking for up to 10 pages of your work, so this could be an extract from your novel or a collection of short stories, for example.

Narrative non-fiction has stylistic and structural similarities to fiction but deals instead with factual or mostly factual subject matter. Work that fits in this category includes biography, memoir, nature writing and non-fiction with a strong literary intent. Works of factual, technical, journalistic and scientific writing, local history, travel writing or translation are not eligible for entry.

The award is open to submissions of work written in World English by writers from the global majority who at the time of entering are permanently resident in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.. We regret we are unable to accept submissions from outside these areas due to conditions in our funding from the North East Combined Authority.

The award supports new work in progress. The work that you enter for the awards must be your current work in progress. For prose writers we expect to see an extract of work supported by a synopsis that fully describes the book that you are working to complete. Your application is not eligible if the work that you are submitting is currently part of a book deal that you have received a publishing contract and advance for. If you receive a book deal for your work during the judging period it is your responsibility to inform us.

To be considered, work does not have to be of a ‘northern’ flavour or have a ‘northern’ theme. Writers who are writing books set in the North of England but who do not live in the region are not eligible.

All entries must be made through the online submissions portal. To qualify, a submission must consist of two items: the online application form and the creative work in progress. To be eligible submissions to the awards must have been made by the award deadline. Submissions received after the deadline will not be eligible for entry.

New Writing North will make final decisions on eligibility. Our decisions will be final and no communication will be entered into on the subject.

For more advice and guidance on your application, see our Significant Ink: Newcastle FAQs (below). If you have checked the FAQs and have further questions, please contact [email protected].

FAQs

Do I need to attend a workshop in order to apply for the award?

If you cannot attend our free workshops, you are still welcome to apply.

Do I need to live in a certain area to apply for the award?

Yes, you need to permanently reside in the  North East Mayoral Strategic Authority (County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland).

Can I enter the award if I am a student living in area?

Winners of this award must not be in full-time education or another government programme. You may still be in education when applyingbut must be sure you have left education by the time the Significant Ink programme begins in September 2026.

How old do I need to be to enter an award?

You must be over 18 years of age to enter. The Young Northern Writers’ and Matthew Hale awards are for writers aged 11 to 18 years of age.

What do you mean by global majority?

Global majority is a shortened version of the term people of the global majority. It refers to all ethnic groups except white British and other white groups, including white minorities. Global majority includes people from black, Asian, mixed, and other ethnic groups who are often racialised as ‘ethnic minorities’.  (NCVO)

Is this opportunity intended to be for people from the global majority?

Yes, we are supporting and encouraging new or emerging writers from the global majority.

How should I format my manuscript?

Please format your work as double-spaced for prose, 12-point text. You’re free to choose a font that appeals to you but avoid anything that doesn’t suit the tone of your work.

Should I enter consecutive chapters of my manuscript?

Ideally, you should enter Chapter 1 followed by as many consecutive chapters as allowed within the word limit. If you feel strongly that you would like to enter work from different parts of the manuscript, this is acceptable as long as you provide clear context.

Should I put my name on the extract?

No, please don’t. All our awards are judged anonymously.

What happens if I go over the word or page limit for my entry?

The word and page limit for each award is a guide. Don’t worry if you go slightly over (or under) the limit in order tosubmit a complete chapter, but please be as close as possible.

Can I enter more than one award?

Yes you are welcome to apply for the Northern Writing Awards.

Can I enter if I already have an agent?

Yes. It’s useful for us to know if you already have an agent representing your work. Please only mention having an agent if you have actually signed a representation agreement with an agency.

Can I enter if I already have a book deal?

As the awards exist to support work in progress you cannot enter work that is completed and for which a publishing deal is secured.  We define a book deal as being a signed contract with a publisher.   You should so far have not published a full-length work (a novel, memoir or poetry collection) but may have published individual short stories or poems, or a poetry pamphlet.

Can I enter a self-published book or e-book?

No. The awards are aimed at supporting new work and work-in-progress, so work that has been previously published as a book or e-book is not eligible.

Are the awards judged anonymously?

The entries are judged anonymously at all stages of the process. The reading team and judges will not see any of the monitoring information you submit, which is an important part of ensuring the judging process is fair and even.

You will need to include your name when you register but please leave it off your application questions and don’t include it on any part of your submission, such as the title page or as a header or footer, or in the document file name.

Submissions will be read internally at New Writing North.  A shortlist will then be passed to writers Emily Low and Ashley Thorpe to select the three winners.

Can I use my award money to buy equipment?

We would rather writers used awards funding to support their time to write through buying time off from work commitments, childcare or to fund creative retreats. Please do not make explicit asks for technical equipment in your submission as this will weaken your application.

Why do you only accept submissions online?

Due to the amount of submissions we receive, it is more manageable to accept digital applications. We use an online portal called Submittable which is an external company that many other organisations use. If you have submitted to any other programme that uses Submittable, you may already have an account. We advise you to submit via a computer rather than a mobile device, but if that isn’t an option for you we recommend using the Submittable app.

How do you define new, emerging, published and established writers?

Unpublished: you have never published in magazines, websites or anthologies, or your work has not been broadcast or staged yet.

Emerging: your work has appeared online, in magazines, pamphlet form or anthologies, but you are yet to publish a full-length work. If a scriptwriter, your work has begun to be performed or broadcast.

Published: you have published one full-length work (novel, collection of short stories or poetry collection) or you have had a full script performed or broadcast.

Established: you have published two or more full-length works (novels, collections of short stories or poetry collections) or had two or more plays or TV episodes staged or broadcast.

What is narrative non-fiction?

Narrative non-fiction has stylistic and structural similarities to fiction but deals instead with factual or mostly factual subject matter. For the Northern Writers’ Awards, our definition of the work that fits into this category includes biography, memoir, nature writing and non-fiction with a strong literary intent.

How can I protect my intellectual property when making a submission?

By submitting work for an award you are agreeing to it being read by awards sifters, judges and staff at New Writing North. The copyright of your work stays with you at all times and New Writing North does not exert or ask for any rights over your work at any point in the process.

Why do you ask for personal information?

Each year we produce de-personalised statistical information on entrants for the awards, which we report to Arts Council England, our funders. We look at entries by gender, ethnicity, geography and age. Undertaking this work helps us to see if we need to work harder to attract entries from any underrepresented groups or locations. No personal data is included in the reporting or used in any other way during this process.

What will you do with my data and work?

We use Submittable to receive your application, which allows you to maintain control over our access to your work – you can withdraw it at any time. Read more about Submittable’s data policy here

We understand that some of the questions on the application form are detailed and personal. We ask optional evaluation research questions which are not part of the application process. They will in no way impact your application. Please see here for more information on how we may use your application data.

You will only receive future correspondence from New Writing North if you have specifically signed up to receive our email newsletters as part of the submission process. This is not mandatory and once you have signed up you can unsubscribe at any time. We do not share your data or personal information with any other businesses or organisations and we abide by all data protection legislation.

Do you have an equality statement?

New Writing North has a Single Equality Scheme statement that underpins all of our activities and which is reviewed annually by our board of trustees. If you wish to obtain a copy of it, please contact [email protected].

If you have any further questions, please contact [email protected].

Conditions of Entry

All submissions to the awards must be made via the awards website.

Incomplete submissions will not be considered or acknowledged.

The work that you enter must be your own original work.

All submissions must be written by a single author.

If you win an award you will be asked to prove your place of residence and identity.

New Writing North withholds the right to withdraw and reclaim the financial value of an award if it is discovered that a writer has fabricated any information in their submission.

The awards are not open to employees and trustees of New Writing North or of our major supporters, Arts Council England and Northumbria University.

All winning authors must be available to participate in media and PR for the award around the time of the awards ceremony and related events.

We reserve the right to vary the rules and conditions of entry and to make any amendments to the published schedule as are deemed necessary.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your submission is eligible for the prize. By entering your work for the awards you are confirming to us that the work that you are submitting is your own original work, and that you have read and agree to the Conditions of Entry of the awards.

We will write to everyone who entered for an award and inform them of the outcome of their application once the judging process has concluded.

We apologise in advance that we are unable to enter into individual correspondence with writers about submissions that do not win awards or to give specific feedback on every submission that is made. This is due to the exceptionally large amount of entries that we have to process as part of the awards.

We intend that entering your work for the awards is an accessible process. If you are unclear about any aspect of the submission process please see Significant Ink: Newcastle FAQs (above). If you have checked the FAQs and have further questions, please contact [email protected].
