Your True stories… Live

The Spark is true story telling… live

Last autumn in New York we visited The Moth, which is an exuberant and popular real-life storytelling night. Inspired by this, New Writing North and Hexham Book Festival are getting together to bring our own version to the North East, and we’re calling it The Spark.

We want to hear from people from all walks of life who are willing to prepare a true story on a theme and perform it for a curious crowd of friendly but discerning listeners.

To take part, all you need to do is turn up on the night and put your name in our hat. If you are picked, you get the chance to get up on stage and do your thing. A judging panel made up of audience members will score each story according to The Rules*. The winner will get a huge heap of love and glory.

Hosted by Gary Kitching from The Suggestibles, the inaugural Spark event is at Northern Stage in Newcastle, where the theme is ‘The Argument’, in homage to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which is on there from 12-30 April.

The second Spark is at Hexham Book Festival when we’ll be inviting you to bare all on the theme of ‘True Love’.

To help get things started, we have asked writers AL Kennedy and Harry Pearson to come along and tell their own true stories and then it’s up to the you to make it work.

So whether you are a budding story teller or someone who just loves to hear a good yarn, come along to what promises to be a fun, probably insightful, and most definitely unpredictable night.

* THE RULES

• Each story must last no more than five minutes

• Your story must be based on the theme set by The Spark.

• The story must be true

• It also must actually be a story, ideally one with a beginning, middle and end (It would also be a good idea to practise it beforehand, because there are no prompts allowed: once you’re up on that stage, it’s just you and the microphone!)
