Wonders of the North team need a playwright: deadline 19 April We’re delighted to be taking part in the Wonders of the North festival, a festival aiming to raise the sense of belonging which young people feel to this summer’s Olympics by celebrating the region, its places, stories and traditions. The festival is organised by Changemakers and each of the ten projects which make up the festival will be led, directed and devised by a team of young people. The festival will take place throughout Newcastle and Northumberland from 27 July-5 August, to coincide with the Olympic opening ceremony. We are looking for an experienced playwright to work with the Wonders of the North team to write a series of mini-plays/monologues.

For our part of the project, a team of young writers from New Writing North will be joining up with young performers from Northern Stage to devise and perform a site-specific work in the Grainger Market in Newcastle. Our aim is to celebrate not only the historic building but also the stories of everyday life which the building contains; we want the people of Newcastle to be our Wonder of the North.

We are looking for an experienced playwright to work with the Wonders of the North team to write a series of mini-plays/monologues. The project will be based around and be performed in the Grainger Market so all applicants should be familiar with the location. Applicants should also have a proven track record of working collaboratively to deliver workshops and ideally would have experience of working with young people.

The commitment will be two intensive days of workshops, by the end of which a finished script must be produced. Workshops will take place in June on consecutive Saturdays (dates TBC). There will also be opportunities for the writer to attend meetings with the young performers from Northern Stage and the performance of the final work. The fee will be £500.

To apply for this position, email your writing CV and a sample of your work to [email protected]. Please do this even if you have previously worked with NWN, as this is a process led and administered by the Wonders of the North team and all CVs will be read by them. All shortlisted applicants must be willing to attend an informal interview to be conducted by the Wonders of the North Team. The deadline for applications is 19 April.
