Words Across Northumberland writer in residence

Posted by

Deadline for applications: 30 April 2013

Words Across Northumberland, run by Hexham Book Festival, is seeking a writer in residence for a three-day residency in Rothbury in June 2013, leading to the production of a piece of prose or poetry by the end of October 2013.

Words Across Northumberland is working in collaboration with Northumberland Libraries to offer two authors the opportunity of a short residency in Morpeth and Rothbury libraries in June 2013. These areas have been chosen as they are both places that have been very affected by flooding in recent years and water/climate/weather etc is an interesting and broad theme on which to base a creative piece of work.

The authors will spend two days ‘resident’ in the library, talking to visitors of all ages, and then half a day on the mobile library going around the villages of rural Northumberland. The authors’ presence and the theme will be advertised locally and drop-in sessions will be arranged on an informal basis for residents to share their experiences.

The aim of the residency is to enable the writer to spend a period of time, meeting staff and visitors and creating a story/collection of poems based around the theme of floods/flooding, climate change inspired by the experiences of the local people. The subsequent story/poems will be included in an anthology (working title: Stories From the Flood) which may be available as a podcast or in hard copy format (subject to funding).

It is hoped that the residencies can take place by the end of June 2013. The author will produce a piece of work for either audio or broadcast purposes. Deadline for the piece of work will be end of October 2013. There is a fee for the residency and travel and accommodation costs will be covered.

Although the writer based in Morpeth has been chosen, the team is still looking for an author for the Rothbury residency. The format for this will be as follows (dates TBC but ideally between 10 and 21 June):

Wednesday morning: arrival

Wednesday afternoon: join mobile library travelling around rural villages between Netherton, Alwinton and Wittingham

Thursday & Friday: all day in Rothbury Library

To apply for the residency, please email your writing CV to Susie Troup, Director of Hexham Book Festival, on [email protected] before Tuesday 30 April 2013.
