Significant Ink: Newcastle

Significant Ink: Newcastle is a writer development and outreach programme for global majority writers based in and around Newcastle upon Tyne.

New Writing North presents Significant Ink: Newcastle in partnership with One Strawberry Lane, The John Marley Centre, and Newcastle Libraries.

We are holding four writing workshops across Newcastle in June and July to cover short stories, life writing, ‘from idea to page’ and writing for young people.

These two-hour workshops are free to attend and are open to global majority writers who are aged 18+, with any level of writing experience.  You could have some writing experience or be a complete beginner!  You don’t need to apply to take part in these workshops, but you do need to book a free place.

Significant Ink: Newcastle will also be open for applications to be one of three selected writers from 10th June–16th July. You will need to submit a short sample of your writing and answer a few short questions. Your writing could be fiction or narrative non-fiction. The three writers will receive £1000 to support their writing, tailored mentoring, peer-support and development sessions with partners.

The programme is funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and Arts Council England.

Please note, applicants for the award must be aged 18+ and part of the global majority. They must permanently reside in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, or Sunderland, and should not be in full-time education when the programme begins in September 2026.
