Debora Maité

Debora is an Italian-born, Scotland-based writer and filmmaker, drawn to character-driven storytelling that amplifies voices often pushed to the margins. Her practice centres on care, interrogating the tension between personal fulfilment and collective consciousness; between becoming oneself and belonging to others.
She has been shortlisted for several talent development schemes, including the Merky Books New Writers’ Prize (Penguin Random House) and the Bloomsbury Mentorship Programme. Her short film You Land, commissioned by the British Film Institute and Screen Scotland, earned a Scottish BAFTA nomination in 2024.
Debora is currently developing her debut feature film, as well as a short story collection titled Stages of Bruising. The stories chronicle deeply flawed yet irresistible characters who weaponise their own caring, turning obsession into elaborate coping mechanisms for awkward lives that feel perpetually on the verge of collapse.
Debora was part of the 2024/25 cohort of A Writing Chance, on the Faber strand.
