Mie Murasa

Fiction, narrative non-fiction, literary, place, human connection.

Mie Murasa is a British-Japanese writer from South Yorkshire currently working towards a Creative Writing MA. Inspired by writers from Sayaka Murata to the Brontës and passionate about storytelling in all its forms, Mie writes literary fiction, creative non-fiction and screenplays. Their work emphasises place, human experience and social critique through the perspective of distinctive, hopeful narrators.

Interested in intersectional identities, their current work in progress, a creative non-fiction memoir set in Tokyo, Japan, speaks to their biracial experience. It explores the excitement of the city, travel, culture and plenty of youthful abandon, as well as her dynamic relationship with her grandmother and the even more complicated one she has with herself. The memoir plays on elements of travel writing, and the themes of identity, coming of age and belonging would appeal to readers of Crying in H Mart. Mie has completed a first draft and is seeking representation.

A magical realist novel, set on a remote fishing island in Japan with themes of climate, cultural colonialism and connection, is also in development.

Mie was part of the 2024/25 cohort of A Writing Chance, on the Faber strand.
