Sunita Thind

Memoir, journalism, narrative non-fiction, fiction, poetry.

Sunita is a biracial, disabled, ovarian cancer survivor, and is a writer, freelance journalist, poet and memoirist. She has published two poetry books, The Barging Buddhi and Other Poems and The Coconut Girl, and was awarded an Arts Council England grant to write her memoir. She has written for the Daily Mirror, Mslexia, Metro, Take a Break, Bridges to Barriers, Gal Dem, and TLC. Sunita is also a model, singer, make-up artist, actress, English teacher, and creative writing facilitator.

Sunita is currently writing a memoir titled Pontianak, which chronicles an eight-year journey of survival, self-discovery and spiritual exploration. Pontianak follows Sunita as she navigates the storms of Ovarian Cancer and battles infertility, surgeries, organ removal and chemotherapy. It explores the weight of cultural expectations and of rediscovering her Malaysian and Singaporean heritage, including fertility rituals, black magic and traditions. Memories of these tropical islands intertwine with a fight for her own womanhood as a disabled woman of colour, and as she confronts her own mortality, she becomes haunted by a Pontianak: a vampiric Malaysian female ghost who died in childbirth with a stillborn child in her womb. Sunita is currently seeking representation.

Sunita was part of the 2024-25 cohort of A Writing Chance, on the Daily Mirror strand.
