Zainab Amer

Zainab Amer seeks voices that often go unheard. A British-Egyptian writer based in Manchester and originally from London, she has always been fascinated by people and their stories. Her work in the NGO sector has also acted as a source of inspiration. Zainab mostly writes about women and how events shape narratives.
She recently launched The Unranting Feminist, a Substack newsletter rooted in journalism where she shares interviews, feature articles and opinion pieces. Stories have included a mother’s experience withdrawing from anti-psychotic medication and the healthcare failures that followed and a piece on “dead woman” tropes in media, pondering society’s obsession with true crime and questioning whether the entertainment industry should focus more on survival stories than on gratuitous violence.
Zainab began writing publicly in 2023, reviewing podcasts covering everything from cooking to women’s sports. Currently she is growing The Unranting Feminist and working on a feature based on a local woman who founded a storytelling group, which has flourished into a hub for writing workshops, poetry readings, and community connection.
Zainab was part of the 2024/25 cohort of A Writing Chance, on the Daily Mirror strand.
